Vedic Maths and Quick Mental Sums for Exam Quant
Quantitative aptitude scares many non-math students. That is fair. You did not pick Commerce or Arts to live inside equations. But exam boards do not ask for your degree — they want speed.
Good news: you do not need a deep pure-math degree. Vedic maths and mental shortcuts cut solving time by 50–70%. At ACIselect, Specialized Quantitative Training starts simple — no math stream required.
We help you get ready for government and banking exams at ACIselect in Guwahati. Only 30 students join each batch.
Why non-math students can still win
- You skip long pencil-only habits
- You learn short pattern rules early
- You do not hide behind old-school steps you must undo later
Students move from "I hate math" to high quant accuracy in about 8 weeks when they follow steps, not "natural gift."
8 Vedic and mental methods (with numbers)
1. Nikhilam Sutra — multiply near 100
Rule: For two numbers near 100, take each shortage from 100, cross-cut, multiply the shortages.
Example: 97 × 94
- Shortages: 3 and 6
- Cross: 97 − 6 = 91 (or 94 − 3 = 91)
- Shortages multiply: 3 × 6 = 18
- Answer: 9108
Exam: Percent sums, chains in profit-loss
2. Base method — multiply near 50 or 1000
Example: 998 × 997
- Short from 1000: 2 and 3
- 998 − 3 = 995
- 2 × 3 = 06 → 995006
Exam: Simplification in banking prelims (very fast)
3. Duplex — square numbers ending in 5
Rule: Number ends in 5 (e.g. 65²):
- Take digits before 5 (6), times (digit + 1): 6 × 7 = 42
- Add 25
- Answer: 4225
Example: 85² → 8 × 9 = 72 → 7225
Exam: Square use in Number System, Algebra bits
4. Fraction → percent shortcut
Learn these fractions:
| Fraction | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 1/2 | 50% |
| 1/3 | 33.33% |
| 1/4 | 25% |
| 1/5 | 20% |
| 1/6 | 16.67% |
| 1/8 | 12.5% |
| 1/12 | 8.33% |
Example: 12.5% of 480 = 480 ÷ 8 = 60 (straight line)
Exam: Roughly 5–8 percentage items each banking / SSC paper
5. Complement multiply (× 9, × 99, × 999)
Rule for × 9: multiply by 10, then minus the same number.
Example: 456 × 9 = 4560 − 456 = 4104
For × 99: multiply by 100, subtract the number. Example: 250 × 99 = 25000 − 250 = 24750
Exam: Simplification, DI quick checks
6. Add left-to-right (less carry panic)
Example: 347 + 285 + 163
- Hundreds: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
- Tens: 4 + 8 + 6 = 18 → carry 1 → 7 for tens slot
- Units: 7 + 5 + 3 = 15 → carry 1 → unit 5
- Answer: 795
Exam: DI tables where rows or columns sum in your head
7. Divisibility — fast drop of wrong answers
| Divisor | Rule |
|---|---|
| 2 | Last digit even |
| 3 | Digit sum divisible by 3 |
| 4 | Last two digits divisible by 4 |
| 5 | Last digit 0 or 5 |
| 8 | Last three digits divisible by 8 |
| 9 | Digit sum divisible by 9 |
| 11 | Alternating +/- of digits divisible by 11 |
Example: Is 2,794 divisible by 11?
- (2 + 9 + 4) − (7) = 15 − 7 = 8 → No
- Saves seconds vs trial division among options
8. Ratio — cross-multiply shortcut
Example: If 3:5 = x:40, find x.
- x = (3 × 40) / 5 = 24
Harder mix: a:b = 2:3, b:c = 4:5 → a:b:c = 8:12:15 (LCM on the middle term b)
Exam: Mixtures, partnerships, time–work mixes

Before vs after — time saved sample
| Task | Older style | Mental / Vedic style | Seconds saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 97 × 94 | 45 seconds | 8 seconds | 37 sec |
| 12.5% of 640 | 30 seconds | 5 seconds | 25 sec |
| 85² | 60 seconds | 10 seconds | 50 sec |
| 456 × 9 | 25 seconds | 5 seconds | 20 sec |
On about 30 quant items, total saved is about 15–20 minutes — room for many more tries.
